Data Protection and Privacy Workshop at Coronet Consult

The Tech Privacy Legal Lab as part of its mission to ensure privacy and the accountable use of technology, trained Coronet Consult Limited, a company focused on collateral management and business advisory. The training encompassed data protection and privacy. There were eight staff from Coronet Consult that were trained.

Businesses have an enhanced obligation to respect data privacy rights. ‘A business’ ability to transfer and use customer data and other information is both integral to the day-to-day running of a company and key to profitability and success… it is important now more than ever that businesses are fully informed and fully compliant.’ Jonathan Kewley.

The Workshop covered the following:

  • An understanding of ‘data’ and ‘privacy.’
  • Privacy rights from Public International Law and other continental regulations. For instance the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • The 1995 Constitution of Uganda and The Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019

The training underscored the individual and corporate obligations for the stakeholders in Coronet Consult and recommended measures to ensure the compliance with the different legal regimes.

The training concluded with a universal commitment that recognizes that privacy is a fundamental right, essential to autonomy and the protection of human dignity.
